The Monkeys bring us Variety

I’m with the Monkey releases its latest song, ‘It’s True’. They seem to have turned on their engine, because it’s more intense than their previous records.

I deliberately like I’m with the Monkey, because – as distinct from its name – the band seems to be a real chameleon. They can change vibe and rhythm so that each song has a different ambience. If their discography becomes bigger and bigger, you will be able to choose a song to fit any of your moods. And that’s something. That’s the chameleon effect.

I wrote about their previous EP a year ago. Those songs were a bit slow and sometimes quite intimate. Now, forget these attributes, ’cause the new one, ‘It’s True‘, is nothing like that. Almost the opposite: intense and vibrating. You can feel the intensity. The funny part is that I couldn’t hear the keyboard at first. I had to listen to it a couple of times before I realised, ‘Hey, I can hear the new stuff’. Fusing keyboards with guitar music is a risky game, but this wedding was successful, I believe.

And what about Variety? Why did I mention it before? Well, because my first thought was that we are in the Moulin Rouge. In Paris. Sorry, but I felt it pretty much. Even if I know, I hear the guitar, but my mind says it’s not a rock song as you would imagine in the classical sense. And I see girls in fancy costumes, red ones with black stockings. They are dancing and meanwhile, I’m with the Monkey is playing.

There is only one ‘problem’: the lyrics. They are totally different. It’s about the very human instinct: War or something like that. So maybe you should try to imagine that we are in Saigon in the ’60s. Vietnam war like in ’Apocalypse Now’. But I guess it’s too much, so anyway, instead of my dumb mumbling, listen to the song carefully.

If you wanna see them live, you can check ’em out on the 24th of June at Dürer Kert, Budapest. They will perform with Turn Signals, The Somersault Boy and Kedveskovács. Have fun!
