You are standing somewhere in the North, in a deserted area, in an abandoned lumber- or gold digger village somewhere in Alaska. You can see sky-high pines everywhere around you. Meanwhile, music is in the air: tight, but ethereal guitar riffs are playing hide-and-seek with snare-drum rhythms. It’s foggy and you start wondering: is this real or is my mind playing tricks on me? Can I make sense of my own subconscious and how far did I actually come?

You have to think these thoughts spontaneously if you listen the new LP, ‘Sweet Revenge For Weak Days‘ by Hoodoo Offenders. It seems not to be so complex at first but listening to the songs, again and again, you cannot turn off your subconscious.

(Here is the full album, if you wanna open it by phone, click it and you can listen! And then you can read on 😉 )

I may overreact but I bear with me. The title of one of the funniest Hungarian author, Frigyes Karinthy’s self-biographical novel, called ‘Journey around my skull’. Even if the music is not so philosophic, I can hardly keep any distance of transcendence. So I’m travelling around my neck. Imagine. The whole thing is (a bit surrealistic) road movie kinda self-hallucinogenic trip with the question: ‘Am I really here? Or it’s just a dream?’ Then you can get out of the groove when some pop-rock elements are coming. It’s sober time, my friend.

But the self-star-gazing experience is still on from beginning to end. You can see this ambience in the LP’s warm-up music video, ‘So Long‘. It’s like a black and white compilation of Miró’s and Dalí’s and their moviemaker friend, Luis Bunuel’s artistic imaginations. Or – not to travel further than the US – it’s like Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane who wants to run away. You don’t have to follow him. Instead, check out the guys (even) live, if you can! It’s not mumbo-jumbo like my words recently.
